THE "HOSPITAL" BAG
What to bring?
This is the bag you will take with you to the hospital or the birthing suite. I recommend taking one bag in with you and leaving the rest in your car until after your baby is safely delivered and in your arms. It can be crowded in the hospital and you may be moved from room to room.
2 pairs of comfy pajamas
one pair to labour in
one pair for after
Socks and/or slippers
Toiletries
Home coming clothes for Mama
Home coming clothes for Babe
(a boy outfit and a girl outfit if gender is unknown)
(usually newborn size will do, but for bigger babes you might want to have a 0-3 month ready)
Snacks...nuts, seeds, fruit, energy bars (make sure they are things you like as you will need to keep your energy up during labour)
Coconut water
(or drink of choice for electrolyte replacement)
Change for parking (currently $6 for a day)
Camera or cell phone for photos and chargers!
A copy of your birth preferences
Any music and music playing device, LED candles you may wish to place around the room
Comfort measures for labour, such as heating pad, massage oil, etc.
Your doula will also bring her bag of comfort items :)
To Bring as well....
But leave in the car for now
Infant car seat (practiced and ready for baby)
breastfeeding pillow
Snacks or meals for after labour (can be left in car at cooler times of the year)
Dad's toiletries and clothes, and sleeping items (apnea, etc)
THE BIRTH PLAN
To have a plan or not to have a plan!?! That is the question.
This is a really good question.
As a doula and a mom, I do believe it is a good idea to have a "loose" birth plan or an ideal birth plan. However, it is even more important to realize that birth is an unpredictable journey that can never be controlled or planned for in it's entirety . I suggest that expectant parents visualize the more "ideal" birth and believe in the body's ability. I also suggest that they look at the very real possibility of a less than ideal birth, C-section rates, interventions and options.
Here are the important things you should include:
I do not wish to be offered medications for pain (if this is your desire)
Delayed Cord Clamping
Skin to skin
Breastfeeding Support
Oxytocin for Mom at moment of Birth ...Active or Physiologic
Vitamin K shot for Newborn...Yes, which method?
Erythromicin eyedrops for Newborn...Yes or No
You could include:
That you would like to announce the gender
That you would like dim lighting and soft music
Anything unusual such as past trauma or emotional issues that may affect your birth.
